Flower Dictionary: Gerbera Daisies:

Gerbera jamesonii - H. Bolus ex J. D. Hook
Family: Asteraceae/Compositae (Daisy Family)
Common names: Gerbera, African daisy, Transvaal daisy, Barberton daisy

The Gerbera is one of the world's top ten most popular flowers. The Gerbera daisy, known as the Transvaal Daisy, originated in South Africa. It is named after German naturalist Traugott Gerber, a German botanist and naturalist, who traveled extensively in Russia. The daisy's vibrant colors attract attention and add that perfect touch to any occasion.

Gerbera daisies are usually grown as annuals in many parts of the country. However, with the proper care--or if you live in a temperate area--gerberas can be grown as perennials. They can only take temperatures as low as the mid-40s during the winter, so you might need to dig them out of the ground and move them into a cold frame or another suitable, cool structure for winter storage. If they are in pots, this job is all the easier.

Gerbera is a genus comprising about 40 species they distributed from Africa across to Madagascar into tropical Asia and South America . Through hybridization, a massive array of colours are available. Having a long vase life, these flowers are widely used in the Cut Flower Industry. These are great plant for adding colour to any room or garden.

Native Habitat:  Endemic to South Africa

Cultivation:- This species seems to thrives at about 24°C(75°F). In winter temperature can safely be dropped down to 10°C(50°F). Plants are frost tender must be grown at above +5ºC. Freezing of plants usually result in dead of the plant. Place into a direct sunlight position, plant require a high light source to produce an abundance of flowers. Plant can grown quite well in partially shaded position, but tend to flower poorly. Plant need to remain slightly moist at all times, especially when in flower.

Potential Problems:- While healthy Gerberas are rarely bothered by pests, plants in a poor environment or poorly cared for, can be attacked by Aphids, Whiteflies, Mites, Leaf Spots. Fungus and stem rot is a common problem with over watered plants.

Propagation:- propagation may be achieved through seeds, cuttings or through dividing. Seed has a short viability for good germination, if seeds fail to germinate within about 20 days it is likely the seeds will not germinate at all. Plant grown from seeds can greatly differ from the parent plants. Basal cuttings should be taken in summer, the addition of a rooting hormone may increase your success and shorten the time needed from cutting to potting into their own pots. Division should be taken in early spring, try to minimize the damage to the plants root when dividing or transplanting.

Vase life:   up to 14 days, to prolong vase life - every 4-5 days, change the water, rinse the vase and re-cut the flowers stem, this will double the life of your flower.

Care&Tips:   Remove old leaves to prevent fungus infections. When repotting ensure the crown of the plant is above the level of the soil. Indoor watering: one of the best way of watering plants grown indoors, is by placing the plant into a shallow saucer, fill the saucer with water and allowing the plant to draw up as much water as it needs.

Planting Transvaal Daisies
Steps:
1.  Plant Gerbera daisies in containers or in the garden in full sun and well-drained soil.
2.  Add a light application of organic fertilizer to the planting hole.
3.  Place the plants no deeper than they were when growing in containers.
4.  Set the plants 1 foot apart. (Image 1)
5.  Mulch around but not on top of the plant with 3 inches of organic compost. (Image 2)
6.  Water well until soil is completely moist

Gerbera Daisies should be considered as a short-term plant which should be replaced after 2-3 years maximum. Their showy flowers are long-lasting, and plants should be kept in a temperature range of 40 to 70°F when in flower. They respond well under bright light, with limited full sunlight exposure. Repotting can be done in spring when dividing plants in a peat moss-based potting mix. Allow the soil to dry thoroughly between waterings. Susceptible to thrips and mites.
