best-known symbol of beauty and love. Red roses mean I love you. A dozen
of them make the ultimate statement on Valentine's Day. A single rose
signifies simplicity. Women prefer pastel colored roses, men on the other hand prefer red. The spice saffron comes from a certain type of crocus. Tulip bulbs can be used in place of onions for cooking. In 1986 Congress voted to make the rose America's national flower. The bluebonnet became the Texas state flower in 1901. In 1971, the state legislature, named all lupine species as the official state flower. The flower looks like a little bonnet when you look at it closely. After it rains, look for a drop of water in each bonnet or bowl-like petal. As the Texas bluebonnet flower ages, one of the top petals turns purple-red. Pink and White Lady Slipper (cypripedium reginae) is the State flower of Minnesota. Illegal to pick in the state, the pink and white lady slipper is one of Minnesota's rarest wildflowers. They can take up to 16 years to produce their first flower, and sometimes live for 50 years. The creamy-white bloom of the magnolia tree was designated the state flower of Louisiana in 1900 because of the abundance of trees throughout the state. Magnolia is an evergreen and the flower is usually fragrant. After the six to twelve petals of the flower have fallen away the large cone shaped fruit of the magnolia is exposed. The Peach Blossom became the State flower of Delaware on May 9, 1895. It was prompted by Delaware's reputation as the "Peach State," since her orchards contained more than 800,000 peach trees yielding a crop worth thousands of dollars at that time. California is the source for nearly 60% of all USA-grown fresh cut flowers. Americans bought more than 1.2 BILLION fresh cut roses in the year 1996. That's 4.67 roses for every man, woman, and child nationwide. |

Lilies come in a multitude of colors making them perfect for spring, summer, or fall. California-grown lilies have been perfected to produce a perfect bloom year round in any color you desire.
The Asiatics are the hardiest of all the lily hybrids. They do very well in U.S.D.A. Zones 3 to 10, are easiest for the beginner, multiply the fastest, and are the first to flower each season. They come in a wide range of colors -- white, yellow, orange, red, pink and all shades and color combinations, except the color blue. Flowers are mostly up-facing with a few dainty garden gems carrying outfacing or pendant blooms; all will be exciting when the buds unfurl. These hybrids multiply rapidly and bloom over a long season. Although generally unscented, a light scent can be discerned on warm, still days.
ASIATIC LILY - how to care for them if you receive one as a gift.
Bulbs are mostly five to six inches in circumference, with many of the shorter-growing lilies naturally forming smaller-sixed, mature bulbs in the three- to five-inch range. Bulbs are white with a varying amount of pink tint. Bulb color does not determine flower color; most lily bulbs will turn pinkish when exposed to sunlight during harvest. When planting, cover Asiatics with 3 to 4 inches of fluffy soil, according to the bulb size -- smaller bulbs more shallow.LIGHT: Full or partial sun. Ideal temperatures 68F-75F.
WATER: Thoroughly water when soil is dry to the touch. Keep soil evenly moist, but avoid over-watering. Never allow plant to sit in water.
FERTILIZER: Not required.
PRUNING: After stems and foliage yellow and wither, cut stems off at base. To enjoy bulb plant outdoors, plant bulbs in mid-spring in a sunny location with well-drained soil.
NOTE: As the blooms open, remove the pollen-filled stamens to prevent staining the flower or anything else it comes into contact with, including clothes and furniture.
