A few interesting facts about flowers:
Flowers are sometimes useful to
us for other reasons than just for decoration. A few flowers are important
foods; broccoli, cauliflower and artichoke are collections of flower buds which
we eat as vegetables. Many flowers are used to add taste to food. Cloves are
dried flower buds and saffron comes from the female parts of the purple autumn
crocus.
In some countries the petals of roses and marigolds are used to flavour food
such as soups and salads. Dandelion and elderberry flowers are used to make
wine. In China, fried squash flowers are considered to be a luxury food!
Honey is made from nectar. The best nectar for making honey comes from clover,
orange and sage flowers.
Some flower petals are used to make expensive perfumes, such as jasmine, mimosa
and rose. The petals of some brightly coloured flowers are used to make coloured
dyes for clothes.
Flowers and Reproduction
Flowers
are the reproductive organs of plants. Most flowers are hermaphrodite,
containing both male and female parts. Some flowers are unisexual.
The male sex cells are contained
in the pollen grains produced in the anthers. The female sex cells are the
ovules which develop in carpels.
The pollen of some flowers is transferred
by animals, often insects, from one flower to another. These flowers
are usually brightly coloured, scented and produce a sugary nectar
The wind
can also transfer pollen. Wind-pollinated flowers are inconspicuous. They
are not scented and do not make nectar.
To prevent
self-fertilization in hermaphrodite flowers either the male parts
develop before the female parts or vice versa.
Pollination is just one step
towards fertilization. The male sex cell is taken to the female sex cell by
a pollen tube which grows through the stigma, style and carpel.
Fertilization
happens when the male and female sex cells meet and fuse together.
When all of the ovules have been fertilized, the carpels develop into fruits. Inside the carpels, the ovules are developing into seeds.

Flower Dictionary:
Anthurium: A tropical flower with a small spike covering its oval bloom available in red, pink, white, or obaki (mixture) and grown in all tropical regions. Hawaii supplies the highest quality anthurium of the tropical regions as well as Colombia.
Producing beautiful heart-shaped bracts in hades of reds, pinks, greens, whites and combinations of pastels. Anthuriums will thrive where humidity and mild temperatures are met indoors or out.
When one first encounters an Anthurium flower it is easy to mistake the showy heart shaped spathes and protruding flower spike as being made of plastic. These gorgeous flowers are a combination of white, green and pink with shiny heart shaped green leaves and are valued in the cut flower trade. Obake type flowers are the largest of the Anthurium species ( 6" x 8" flowers ) Plants arrive as bareroot.
Most Anthuriums are epiphytes. Their leaves are generally leathery and tough and can withstand a variety of indoor growing conditions. Their roots should be kept moist, but not wet, at all times. It is better to slightly underwater than to over-water Anthurium plants. If allowed to dry out completely the growth cycle of the plant will suffer, and if over-watered the leaves of the plant will yellow. Although able to grow under low-light conditions, Anthurium plants like bright indirect sun or artificial lighting. No direct sunlight is recommended. If potted, Anthuriums require a fast-draining potting mix. To enhance growth, fertilize monthly with 1/4 strength water-soluble fertilizer. The plants grow well on volcanic rock, an excellent growing medium that provides a firm root base and excellent drainage. An added feature is that Anthuriums are perennial plants and produces flowers throughout the year, so you can enjoy their beauty all year long.
